These Italian coral gold leaf earrings were made in the early seventies. The golden leaves gently envelop the coral bead from above and support it with a small golden bead at the bottom. They somewhat look like gooseberries. The leaves themselves are finely carved with vains, making them life like. Southern Italy has a long standing tradition of crafting jewellery out of the treasures from the sea. For many centuries searching for pearls and corals was done by individual divers, not on an industrial scale. It's best to leave the ‘angel skin' coral alone, it is the coral found around Japan that is becoming increasingly rare and since 1994 it is illegal to dive it up.

This elegant pair has a very summery look. Perfect for a sunny day, or to brighten up a less sunny one.
